What is L-Histidine?

L-histidine is an essential amino acid, meaning the body cannot synthesise it and must obtain it from dietary sources. It plays a fundamental role in protein synthesis and serves as a precursor for several biologically important molecules. Most notably, histidine is the precursor for histamine — a neurotransmitter involved in immune responses, gastric acid secretion, and the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle. Histidine is also required for the production of carnosine, a dipeptide concentrated in muscle and brain tissue that acts as a cellular buffer and antioxidant.

As an essential amino acid, L-histidine must be supplied through protein-containing foods such as meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, and, to a lesser extent, grains and legumes. The body uses histidine for the synthesis of new proteins, for tissue repair, and for the production of histamine and carnosine. Histidine also plays a role in metal ion chelation (binding), which is relevant for the transport and homeostasis of minerals such as zinc and copper in the body.
