What is Silicon Dioxide?

Silicon dioxide (SiO2) is a naturally occurring compound found abundantly in the earth's crust — it is the primary component of sand, quartz, and many types of rock. In food and supplement manufacturing, silicon dioxide serves a specific functional role as an excipient — specifically as an anti-caking agent. It is not an active ingredient and provides no direct nutritional function; rather, it is included in tiny amounts (typically less than 2% of a capsule's contents) to prevent powdered ingredients from clumping together and to ensure that the manufacturing process runs smoothly and consistently.

The use of silicon dioxide in supplements is standard across the clean-label and natural products industry. It is one of the most thoroughly studied and safest excipients in food manufacturing, with a long history of safe use. European food safety authorities have established acceptable intake levels for silicon dioxide as a food additive (E551), and the levels used in supplement manufacturing are well within these safety limits.
