What is Ginger?
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a flowering plant whose rhizome (underground stem) is one of the most widely used culinary spices and traditional herbal remedies in the world. Native to Southeast Asia, ginger has been cultivated and used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The rhizome contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds, with the pungent gingerols and shogaols being the most studied for their biological activity.
Ginger's characteristic pungency comes from gingerols — a family of phenolic compounds that are most abundant in the fresh rhizome. When dried or heated, gingerols can convert to shogaols, which have their own distinct properties. Standardisation of ginger extracts to a guaranteed content of gingerols ensures consistent quality and potency from batch to batch.
