What is Riboflavin?
Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is a water-soluble B vitamin that serves as a precursor for the coenzymes flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). These flavocoenzymes are essential for numerous oxidation-reduction reactions in the body, playing a central role in the electron transport chain — the pathway responsible for the vast majority of cellular energy production. Riboflavin is also required for the metabolism of other B vitamins, including vitamin B6 and folate.
Riboflavin's active form, riboflavin-5'-phosphate (also called flavin mononucleotide), is the form that the body can use directly without enzymatic conversion. This is the form Nutri-Leaf uses in its Vitamin B Complex. Riboflavin contributes to the maintenance of normal vision, skin, and mucous membranes, and plays a role in iron metabolism. It also supports the body's antioxidant defences as a component of the glutathione reductase system.
