مكون السيلينيوم
What is Selenium?
Selenium is an essential trace mineral that is incorporated into selenoproteins — a family of proteins that play critical roles in antioxidant defence, thyroid hormone metabolism, and immune function. The human body contains at least 25 different selenoproteins, including the glutathione peroxidases (which protect cells from oxidative damage), thioredoxin reductases (which regulate cellular redox balance), and iodothyronine deiodinases (which activate and deactivate thyroid hormones). Selenium status directly influences the activity of these enzymes.
Selenium is particularly notable for its role in male fertility — it is required for normal spermatogenesis and is concentrated in the testes. The mineral also supports hair and nail health, with selenium deficiency being associated with characteristic changes to both tissues. Like all trace minerals, selenium must be obtained through diet, and its levels in plant foods vary dramatically depending on the selenium content of the soil in which they are grown.
EFSA-approved health benefits
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has confirmed that selenium:
- contributes to normal spermatogenesis
- contributes to the normal function of the immune system
- contributes to normal thyroid function
- contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress
- contributes to the maintenance of normal hair
- contributes to the maintenance of normal nails
Why we use Selenium in Nutri-Leaf formulas
