What is Zinc?

Zinc is an essential trace mineral that plays a fundamental role in human biology. It is the second most abundant trace mineral in the body after iron and is required for the activity of over 300 enzymes involved in virtually every aspect of metabolism. Zinc is present in every cell, where it supports protein synthesis, DNA synthesis, cell division, and immune function. The body cannot store zinc in significant amounts, making regular dietary intake necessary.

Zinc's biological reach is exceptionally broad. It supports the structure and function of cell membranes, helps maintain the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, and is required for the normal development and function of immune cells including neutrophils, natural killer cells, and T-lymphocytes. Zinc also plays a central role in DNA transcription, enabling the activity of thousands of zinc-finger proteins that regulate gene expression.
