What is Millet?

Millet is one of the oldest cultivated grains in human history, with archaeological evidence of cultivation dating back over 4,000 years in East Asia and the Indian subcontinent. It is a small-seeded cereal grain of the Poaceae family, encompassing several species including foxtail millet, proso millet and pearl millet. Millet has been a dietary staple for populations across Africa and Asia for millennia, prized for its resilience in arid growing conditions and its nutritional density.

Nutritionally, millet is distinguished from many other grains by its mineral content, particularly its silicon, magnesium and phosphorus levels. The grain is naturally gluten-free and has a lower glycaemic index than many refined grains — reasons it remains a staple food in its own right, beyond its use as a supplement ingredient. Nutri-Leaf uses millet seed extract, which provides the grain's minerals in a concentrated form.

Millet as an ingredient

Like bamboo and horsetail, millet naturally contains silicon. Silicon has no Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) under current EU regulations, and no nutrient-function claim is authorised for it. Millet appears on our label as an ingredient fact — we state what it is and where it comes from, and we attach no benefit claims to it.

Traditional use

Millet has been valued across traditional cultures for its nutritional profile, including its naturally occurring mineral content. As a food, it remains a staple for hundreds of millions of people. As a supplement ingredient, it is subject to the same claim rules as everything else on the label: no authorised claim, no claim made.
