Ingredient Methylcobalamin

Methylcobalamin — a form of vitamin B12 used in food supplements.

Methylcobalamin is the biologically active form of vitamin B12. Unlike cyanocobalamin, it requires no conversion in the body. Found in our Vitamin B Complex.

What is Methylcobalamin?

Methylcobalamin is the naturally occurring, biologically active coenzyme form of vitamin B12. Unlike cyanocobalamin, which requires enzymatic conversion in the body to become active, methylcobalamin is immediately available for use in critical metabolic processes. It is the form of B12 that participates directly in the methylation cycle — a fundamental biochemical pathway involved in DNA synthesis, neurotransmitter production, homocysteine regulation, and the maintenance of the myelin sheath that protects nerve fibres.

As the active form, methylcobalamin donates methyl groups in the methionine synthase reaction, which converts homocysteine to methionine and regenerates S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) — the body's primary methyl donor. This methylation process is essential for DNA and RNA synthesis, gene expression regulation, neurotransmitter production, and cellular repair. Methylcobalamin is particularly relevant for individuals who may have reduced capacity to convert cyanocobalamin to its active forms, including older adults and those with certain genetic variations.

EFSA-approved health benefits

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has confirmed that vitamin B12:

  • contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism
  • contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system
  • contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism
  • contributes to normal psychological function
  • contributes to normal red blood cell formation
  • contributes to the normal function of the immune system
  • contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
  • contributes to normal cell division

Why we use Methylcobalamin in Nutri-Leaf formulas

Nutri-Leaf uses methylcobalamin as the active B12 form in our Vitamin B Complex. As the coenzyme form of B12, methylcobalamin bypasses the conversion steps required by cyanocobalamin, making it immediately available for the methylation cycle and nervous system support. This active-form approach reflects our commitment to using the most bioavailable nutrient forms — the body does not need to activate it, it arrives ready for work.

Products containing Methylcobalamin

The Nutri-Leaf product featuring methylcobalamin is Vitamin B Complex, which provides all eight B vitamins at 100% NRV per capsule in active forms, including methylcobalamin (B12), pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (B6), and riboflavin-5'-phosphate (B2).
