Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is essential for the synthesis of coenzyme A — a molecule central to energy metabolism and hormone production. Found in our Vitamin B Complex.
What is Pantothenic Acid?
Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is a water-soluble B vitamin whose name comes from the Greek 'pantothen', meaning 'from everywhere' — reflecting its widespread presence in foods. Pantothenic acid is the essential precursor for coenzyme A (CoA), one of the most important molecules in cellular metabolism. CoA is required for the Krebs cycle (energy production), the synthesis and degradation of fatty acids, the synthesis of steroid hormones including vitamin D, the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, and the production of haemoglobin.
Through its role in coenzyme A, pantothenic acid touches nearly every aspect of metabolism. It is particularly important for the synthesis of steroid hormones (including sex hormones and stress hormones produced by the adrenal glands), the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (essential for memory and muscle control), and the metabolism of drugs and toxins in the liver. Like all B vitamins, pantothenic acid is water-soluble and not stored in large amounts.
