Zinc and Your Immune System: What You Need to Know
Share
The Authorised Statement, First
Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system. That sentence is the entire authorised health claim for zinc and immunity in the EU — and it is deliberately unspectacular. It means zinc is one of the nutrients the immune system needs for normal operation. It does not mean zinc prevents infections, shortens colds, or "boosts" immunity beyond normal function. Products whose wording stays inside the approved statement are doing regulation right; products promising more are promising what the rules do not allow.
Where Zinc Comes From in Food
Zinc is present in a wide range of everyday foods: meat, legumes, seeds, nuts, and whole grains. Because plant sources are absorbed less readily, people on plant-heavy diets sometimes have a harder time covering zinc needs from food alone — one of the situations where a supplement can genuinely fill a gap.
How Much Is Normal, and How Much Is Too Much
The Nutrient Reference Value for zinc is 10 mg per day under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011. The Nutri-Leaf Immunity Complex provides 10 mg per capsule — 100% NRV — and the Skin, Hair & Nails formula provides 3.5 mg (35% NRV).
More is not better. The recommended daily intake exists because the margin between "enough" and "too much" is real. The Immunity Complex label states it directly: avoid taking additional selenium-containing or zinc-containing food supplements alongside this product. If two products both contain zinc, add the amounts together — the sum is what you take.
When a Zinc Supplement Makes Sense
- Your diet is low in zinc-rich foods — for example a plant-heavy diet without enough legumes, seeds, and whole grains.
- A healthcare professional has identified a low intake or a specific need.
For everyone else, food covers the need, and the money is better spent on vegetables than on capsules. A supplement supports the normal function of the immune system where intake is short; it does not upgrade a normal immune system.
The Practical Checklist
- Check the label for the zinc amount and %NRV.
- Check other products you take for overlapping zinc — and respect combination warnings.
- Stay within the recommended daily intake.

Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and a healthy lifestyle.
